Video Game/Technology Addiction in Children: A Growing Concern

As the world becomes increasingly digital, the issue of video game addiction in children is becoming a growing concern for parents and caregivers. While video games can be a fun and entertaining way for children to spend their time, excessive gaming can lead to a host of negative consequences, including poor academic performance, social isolation, and even physical health problems.

Understanding Video Game/Technology Addiction

Video game addiction is a type of behavioral addiction that is characterized by an excessive and compulsive use of video games. This can include playing for long periods of time, neglecting other responsibilities, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not gaming.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), video game addiction is a serious condition that affects both children and adults. The organization has classified “gaming disorder” as a condition requiring further research and added it to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) in 2018.

The Impact of Video Game Addiction on Children

The negative effects of video game addiction on children can be significant. Excessive gaming can lead to poor academic performance, as children who spend too much time gaming may neglect their schoolwork and studies. Additionally, children who are addicted to video games may experience social isolation, as they may spend less time interacting with family and friends.

Physical health problems can also arise from video game addiction. Sitting for long periods of time can lead to poor posture, back and neck pain, and even obesity. Sleep disorders and eye strain are also common among children who spend excessive amounts of time gaming.
